Obsolete Vehicles Must be Declared in Order to Halt Tax Invoices; Scrapped Cars Eligible for Incentives

The Taipei City Motor Vehicle Office would like to remind residents of Taipei City that any owner of an obsolete vehicle must complete the de-registration process and return the vehicle’s license plates before the authorities can halt assessment of license and fuel taxes on the vehicle. Obsolete vehicles can be handed over to the Environmental Protection Administration (toll-free line: 0800-085717) for scrapping. This policy prevents stolen vehicles from using the license plates of obsolete cars, helping protect the property rights of the public. Various incentives are also available to owners of scrapped vehicles; please file the relevant application with the Environmental Protection Administration. In order to prevent de-registered vehicles from occupying public parking spaces (which constitutes illegal parking and a waste of towing resources), the Motor Vehicle Office suggests that owners of obsolete vehicles have them scrapped first, before filing for de-registration at the Motor Vehicle Office. When filing, bring proof of body disposal and the license plates to expedite the process. Body disposal is necessary to prevent car bodies from being used as ghost cars or reassembled for remarketing, and license plates from the vehicle should be turned in to prevent them from being used on stolen vehicles, helping safeguard property rights.
