Active goal:
The Taipei Municipal Yang Ming Home for the Disabled was established thirty years ago. Since then, it has primarily been engaged in nurturing, educating, and caring for the mentally handicapped. The Home cares for students with an average age of around 30 years, and is gradually transitioning into an adult-care organization for the mentally handicapped. To encourage adult students in developing self-reliance and a helping spirit, the Home established the "Yang Ming Extension Scout Troop No. 103" early this year. The objective of the troop is to help the disabled to increase their self-worth and boost their self-esteem. The Yang Ming Extension Scout Troop offers a wide range of activities that are much enjoyed by its members. These include the teaching of basic hand signals (silent scout signals) such as "Attention", "At Ease" and "Salute". Through these activities, students have the chance to learn the scout pledge, rules, and mottos, as well as scouts stories or new songs. The troop is also unique in that the scout leader is a physical and occupational therapist, and has successfully incorporated rehabilitation therapies into the scouting activities. This approach is the beginning of a new service model for comprehensive care of the physically and mentally handicapped.
