Introduction to The LSIO

The purposes of labor inspection are to maintain labor safety and health, protect labor rights and benefits, and enhance a harmonious relationship between labor and management. To maintain this objective, the LSIO strives to increase labor productivity and promote social reconstruction and economic development.

The Labor Standards Inspection Office (LSIO), affiliated to the Bureau of Labor Affairs of the Taipei City Government, is designated  to hadle labor inspection in Taipei City. The enforcement is based on the Labor Inspection Law, the Labor Safety and Health Law, the Labor Standards Law, the Employment Service Law and other related regulations. Under the supervision of the Council of Labor Affairs,  the Executive Yuan and the Bureau of Labor Affairs of the Taipei City Government, the LSIO's chief mission is to increase respect for life in the workplace and take care of workers and laborers. The LSIO’s main duties and responsibilities are the following:

1. Inspection of labor safety and health.
2. Inspection of labor standards.
3. Inspection of special hazardous environment.
4. Inspection of dangerous machinery and equipment.
5. Examination and inspection of dangerous working sites.
6. Labor safety and health education, training, publicity and guidance.

Because of society's recent rapid progress, the renewal of labor inspection has been greatly accelerated as well. The LSIO is thusdevoted to the examination of labor inspection and this has led to the automation of the entire inspection system. The computerizing of data processing, statistics, and management support are included in this system, as well. An intensive study and research into the safety of dangerous machinery and equipment, the prevention of occupational diseases, operation safety measures for the construction industry and medical service business, avoidance of occupational fatality/injury, and labor inspection strategy have all proceeded.

According to labor laws and regulations, it is the employer’s duty and obligation to maintain a safe and healthy working environment under proper conditions. The Labor Inspection Office's mission is to monitor and help all industries and employers to carry out hazard prevention and to protect the interests of workers. In order to strengthen the auditing and service, to be a full-service inspection office, LSIO takes the following measures: door to door active service to promote the ideology of safety and health, the evaluation of large businesses, the guidance of small and middle enterprises, the training of auditing experts in the civil engineering section, training for employed persons with no definite employers, the creation of a self-inspection network to respond to construction industry needs, the compilation of safety and health self-management self-inspection brochures safety practice procedure brochures and steel structure posters for the construction industry.

If transformed from passive to active, all firms can become fully self-managed, thus leading to increased appreciation for labor safety and health.
