Division of Cardiovascular Diseases Services Education Research
The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is in charge of the diagnosis and the treatment of cardiovascular-related disorders of patients. Both invasive and noninvasive methods are applied. Noninvasive procedures include resting ECG, Holter recording, ambulatory blood pressure recording, treadmill exercise testing, echocardiography (M-mode, 2-D, Doppler, transesophageal, integrated backscattered, dobutamine stress, 3-D, etc.), nuclear cardiac imaging (Th201 myocardial perfusion imaging, Tc99m myocardial imaging, etc.), computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Invasive modalities include diagnostic cardiac catheterization, electrophysiological study, radiofrequency ablation for arrhythmias, pacemaker implantation, percutaneous transluminal coronary and peripheral angioplasty with stenting, and balloon valvuloplasty.
The weekly or monthly academic activities include special lectures, echocardiography conferences, emergency medicine conferences, invasive cardiology conferences, electrophysiology conferences, morbidity-mortality conferences, Coronary Care Unit conferences, and cardiology-cardiovascular surgery combined conferences. There are regular teaching ward rounds and morning meetings in the cardiology wards. Cardiology fellows are assigned to different areas of cardiology for a full course of training.
Research in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery include clinical, either intervention or preventive cardiology, and basic research.
