New Track Stadium Ready for Business

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the inauguration ceremony for the renovated Taipei Track and Field Stadium and the opening ceremony for the Chinese Taipei International Athletic Meet 2009 on July 23.
Combined with the existing Taipei Arena and Songshan District Sports Center, the area (collectively known as “Taipei Sports Park”) will become an important place for training future Olympic medalists.
According to the mayor, the original Taipei Track and Field Stadium was inaugurated in August of 1959. For nearly five decades, the stadium hosted important international sports event and trained a number of legendary athletes for this country.
In light of the 2009 Summer Deaflympics, the stadium underwent a two-year overhaul. The refurbished stadium has a distinguished appearance and boasts top facilities. The track stadium will be one of the venues of the upcoming Deaflympics, as well as future international sports event.
During the opening ceremony, Hau noted that the meet has not been held in Taipei for nine years. This time, 606 athletes from Taiwan and 250 foreign athletes from 12 countries will be competing in this event.
International dignitaries attending the event included Vice President Surapong Ariyamongkol and Secretary Mauri ce Nicolas of the Asian Athletics Association, as well as Miyake Katsuji from the Japan Athletics Association.
The Chinese Taipei International Athletic Meet 2009 will be held at the Taipei Track and Field Stadium on July 24 and July 25.
