Mayor Meets with Winners of International Invention Competitions

A group of top Taiwanese inventors met with Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin on July 24 at Taipei City Hall. The 30-member delegation consisted of winners recognized at the Seoul International Invention Fair 2008, Taiwan’s Golden Brain Award, and the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva 2009.
The mayor noted that over 700 inventors from around the world competed at the event in Geneva; Taiwan’s team comprised 44 inventors displaying 35 products from various fields. The team won 21 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze medals. For the Seoul International Invention Fair 2008, Taiwan’s 27-member team brought home 9 gold, 10 silver, 9 bronze, and 8 honorable mention awards.
According to the mayor, inventors invest countless hours and effort in search of the ‘spark’ that might lead to the birth of amazing creations. The results achieved by local inventors demonstrate that even though Taiwan is a small island, it possesses valuable human resources creating products that attract the interest of international companies.
To boost the competitiveness of local firms, the government sponsors a number of awards encouraging innovations, such as the Small and Medium Enterprise Innovation Research Award. The mayor stressed that among the 1.2 million small and medium enterprises on this island, roughly 200,000 are located in Taipei, making the city a hub of creativity and an important foundation of the nation’s industrial might.
Vice Chairman Chen Tsung-tai of the Taiwan Invention Association presented the mayor with four products invented by local talents, including a diamond-shape facemask, a diamond ceramic knife, a hot spring mineral, and a Bluetooth earphone. The Bluetooth earphone created over NT$3 billion in business opportunities for the island.
